A First Timer's Day in Orange County
Cover the OC essentials in one day: a world-class beach, a scenic stop, and a coastal town worth lingering in.
- 1Crystal Cove State Park 8:30 AM
Arrive early for uncrowded beach and the best tide pools. Walk the bluffs above the cove before descending to the sand — the view south toward Laguna is the introduction OC deserves.
- 2Newport Beach & Balboa Peninsula 11:00 AM
Drive north along PCH to the peninsula. Walk to the Balboa Pier, catch the three-car ferry to Balboa Island, and pick up a frozen banana — it's been an OC tradition since 1945.
- 3Little Corona del Mar Tide Pools 2:00 PM
A short drive south of Newport puts you at one of the best accessible tide pool spots on the coast. Low tide reveals sea stars, urchins, and hermit crabs in the rocky reefs below the bluff.
- 4Laguna Main Beach at Sunset 5:30 PM
End the day in Laguna Beach. Walk Heisler Park's cliff-top path above the cove, then head down to the sand as the sun drops behind Catalina Island. The village has good dinner options within walking distance.
Orange County’s coastline runs 42 miles from Seal Beach to San Clemente, and this route samples the best of it without covering too much ground. The stops are concentrated in the Newport Beach–Laguna Beach corridor, which keeps driving time manageable and lets you spend most of the day outdoors.
Start early enough and you’ll have Crystal Cove nearly to yourself. By the time the parking lots fill, you’ll already be heading north to Newport.
