Why Go

Laguna Beach in the early twentieth century was the first significant artist colony on the California coast. The plein air painters who settled here — working directly from the landscape in the manner of the French Impressionists — developed an American regional style that became known as California Impressionism.

The Laguna Art Museum, which opened in 1918 as the Laguna Beach Art Association and has been in continuous operation ever since, holds one of the most significant collections of California plein air and Impressionist painting in existence. Walking through the permanent galleries is a legitimate engagement with the foundational chapter of California painting — not a replica collection assembled after the fact, but the original accumulation of a community.

The Collection

The building sits on Cliff Drive at the north edge of downtown Laguna Beach, up a short flight of stairs. The upper-floor galleries have windows facing the Pacific — not exactly a neutral backdrop for paintings of the California coast, but an honest one.

The permanent collection covers the full arc of California art from the Impressionist period forward, including mid-century modernism and contemporary California artists. The historical rooms with the early plein air work are what make this museum genuinely singular.

Beyond the permanent collection, temporary exhibitions focus exclusively on California artists and California-related themes — a deliberate commitment that functions as a running account of the California art world, past and present.

Local Tips

The museum is closed Tuesdays. Admission is charged for adults, with discounted rates for students and seniors; check the website for current pricing and any free-admission programs.

The museum shop is one of the better art-book destinations in the county, with a strong selection of California art history titles and exhibition catalogs.

Street parking in downtown Laguna is limited. The village structure lots off Forest Avenue are the most reliable option on weekends.
