Great Park Balloon & Carousel

The Orange County Great Park occupies the former Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, one of the largest military base conversion projects in California history. The full Great Park master plan envisions a park that will eventually rival Balboa Park in scale; what exists today is a functioning first phase anchored by the tethered helium balloon that has become one of the more unexpected landmarks in south Orange County. The balloon — a large orange sphere visible from significant distances in every direction — lifts passengers 400 feet above the former airfield on a cable, providing a 360-degree view that on clear days extends from the Santa Ana Mountains to Catalina Island and up the coast toward Los Angeles. The ride itself is brief, but the view is disproportionately good relative to the effort required to see it.

The balloon operates on a reservation system and is subject to weather and wind conditions. Checking the Great Park website before making the drive is worthwhile, particularly on windy days or when the balloon is undergoing scheduled maintenance. On days when the balloon is grounded, the rest of the park grounds remain accessible.

The Great Park also operates a historic carousel in the adjacent Farm + Food Lab area — a traditional carousel with hand-painted animals and a design referencing the agricultural history of the Irvine Ranch. The Farm + Food Lab includes demonstration gardens, seasonal farmers market programming, and educational exhibits about the farming practices that shaped the land the park now occupies. The combination of the balloon and the carousel provides a coherent two-hour visit for families, and the open lawn areas surrounding the attractions are well-suited to unstructured outdoor time in between.

The broader Great Park campus includes ice skating facilities, a soccer stadium (home to the LA Galaxy’s affiliate club), and additional sports fields, which can make the wider complex busy on event days. The balloon and carousel area is accessible from its own parking area off Great Park Boulevard and is generally less affected by stadium event traffic. The architecture of the balloon pavilion and the permanent infrastructure visible throughout the park reflect the ambition of the overall master plan — the bones of a substantial public park are clearly visible in what exists today even as the larger vision remains in progress.
